Journey into Whitechapel, London, during 'Jack the Ripper’s,' brutal reign of terror. When innocent Catherine Bell stumbles into the seedy world of Madame Davenport’s brothel lodging-house she meets lothario Edward Cross, who feels his ambitious diary of the Whitechapel area’s prostitutes will benefit favourably with her entry. Catherine soon begins to experience animosity from the women there, as well as mounting fears over Cross’s brutal and strange sexual manner. With nowhere to turn things worsen when prostitutes in the area begin to disappear one by one, only to be found murdered by a ruthless and bloody man. Soon every woman in Whitechapel is terrified and asking, who is Jack the Ripper?

This book was different than what I normally read, definitely a bit dark for me. The story follows a young woman who is forced to look for work after the death of her last family member. She finds employment at a local tavern where she serves drinks and helps in the kitchen. She finds herself drawn to two men- Eddie, the young Jack-of-all-trades who helps out in the tavern, and Mr. Cross, a wealthy gentleman who is interested in writing about her as a virgin prostitute. Things turn dark when the so called, "Jack the Ripper" begins taking the lives of local prostitutes? Is our heroine in danger? Who will protect?

This story was a bit dark for my taste and a bit raw. But the characters quickly came to life. And I liked that there were no grammatical errors in this novel- most books are filled with them and they drive me crazy!

Overall, three stars. Maybe it's just me, but I like a happier story. But this is historical fiction based on Jack the Ripper. I guess you can't rewrite history to make it "happier".

Nicely done food for thought. The story unfolds and wraps you up in it right away. plus, it keeps moving with description. it is almost like you are there.
Page turner historical read. I found the aspect of treating the working women of the Victorian era, as humans with emotions and not just "things" as in other novels of this era quite refreshing. This novel is not based on Jack The Ripper, although he does play a role in the story, the true story lies in the emotions of working women in Victorian London.
