Winner of the 2010 Miles Franklin Literary Award and the 2012 German International Deutscher Krimipreis.

At the close of a long day, Inspector Stephen Villani stands in the bathroom of a luxury apartment high above the city. In the glass bath, a young woman lies dead, a panic button within reach.

So begins Truth, the companion novel to Peter Temple's bestselling masterpiece, The Broken Shore, winner of the Duncan Lawrie Dagger for Best Crime Novel.

Villani's life is his work. It is his identity, his calling, his touchstone. But now, over a few sweltering summer days, as fires burn across the state and his superiors and colleagues scheme and jostle, he finds all the certainties of his life are crumbling.

Truth is an extraordinary novel about a man, a family, a city. It is about violence, murder, love, corruption, honour and deceit. And it is about truth.

Peter Temple has worked extensively as a journalist and editor for newspapers and magazines in several countries. He has won five Ned Kelly Awards for his novels, and won the world's most prestigious crime writing prize, the Duncan Lawrie Dagger. In 2010 he was awarded Australia's greatest writing prize, the Miles Franklin Literary Award. His books are published in more than twenty countries.

'Truth is about family and morality, city and countryside, private dilemmas and public responsibilities. It's also a stunning piece of psychological portraiture.' Guardian

'Here is an author with a rich talent, a writer to compare with James Ellroy and his tough, taut LA prose...Truth succeeds as a well-paced, most engaging crime novel, a world-class effort. It is also one of the best pieces of modern Australian fiction this decade, if not for many decades.' Courier-Mail

'I hold him in the highest regard as a writer, both in terms of his choice and control of subject matter and his use of language, which is direct and, where necessary, evocative.' John Harvey

'Peter Temple is arguably our leading writer of crime fiction, if not one of Australia's best novelists regardless of genre...This is a complex, multi-layered novel that weaves together past and present crimes with intricate family relationships and the smell of political corruption...the king of Australian crime is back and in exceedingly good form.' Canberra Times

'Temple writes superbly with great visual acuity and moral intelligence. He can twist a lifetime of loss or a career's-worth of camaraderie around a few elliptical exchanges of police business; and his spare, terse prose is lightened with images full of a quirky, unselfconscious poetry' Adelaide Advertiser

'Temple is Australia's premier crime writer because his skill is words. His characters are convincingly established and his observations of Melbourne's manners, milieus and mores are spot on...as soon as I put it down I wanted to read it again.' Herald Sun

'Temple's writing has never been more precise or telegraphic...Truth is both confronting and electrifying. It is Temple's best book.' Age

‘If you loved The Maltese Falcon, you will love Truth…Although Temple’s prose is typified by beautiful, complex sentences, he shares with Hammett a talent for ordinary, yet distinctive dialogue.’ Splash ABC

‘The joy in Temple’s writing—so tight and pared back that it almost seems to be in code. His feel for dialogue and rhythm is superb, his control and timing masterful…Literary masterpieces that also happen to be page-turners.’ Guardian

Truth Broken Shore Series Book 2 eBook Peter Temple

I am a fairly devoted Peter Temple fan. I love his characters as well as the Aussie settings.

“Truth” oozes authenticity and grit...all to the good. The plot is well paced and never gets ahead of itself or strains the bonds of disbelief. And Temple has a point of view on the nexus of local politics and law enforcement, which helps shape the plot. You may or may not agree with his POV, but it adds to the color.

Temple’s writing style is unique. I love it, but I must say..to call it “taut” is a bit of an understatement. It’s telescoped to the point that it teeters on incomprehension. I found myself having to read a number of passages twice just to follow the sinew of the plot. Yes, the novel incorporates tons of Aussie slang, and temple helpfully includes a glossary at the end. However most of the slang can be contextualized throughout, so the glossary is just icing on the cake (for the next Temple novel.) the real hurdle was just having to read so much more between the words than I was capable of.

Nonetheless I am now going to eagerly start the Jack Irish series.

Truth Broken Shore Series Book 2 eBook Peter Temple Reviews

Peter Temple is not well known in the US. His Broken Shores is an excellent introduction. Identity Theory is more of a clandestine thriller than a crime novel. His newest, Truth, introduces a very sympathetic Australian cop whose personal life (and teen aged daughter) is pretty much a disaster. He comes up against powerful and corrupt men and his own limitations. Temple attaches a helpful glossary of Australian slang. His style is a little elliptical, even if the reader is paying attention, but the tone is convincingly hard-boiled. He has a point of view, is a reformer at heart, and is persuasive in his description of contemporary urban Australia. Adrian Hyland, another Aussie thriller writer, takes as his subject matter the Outback and the change and despair of the Aboriginal people. Both are worth a read.
Could not put this down after starting it, in fact was reading it so fast that I had to read it twice to get the full gist of it. A real tangled web of a story and a classic case study on how corruption can creep into leadership, political and law enforcement. The title "Truth" is referred to as a racehorse name in the book, but is a metaphor of how Truth can win at first in society but can die without anyone being able to do anything about it much. It is also a cautionary tale about work/family balance and how it can fail and also triumph with courage. Loved the guest appearance of Jack Irish!
Can't wait to read the rest of his books!
I loved The Broken Shore, Temple's previous novel, and this includes many of the characters from that one, but focuses on a different protagonist. The murders involved are gruesome, and are not for the faint-hearted, but it is a gripping read. There's a glossary at the back to help with the Aussie slang, and you'll need it, unless you're an Aussie yourself. Melbourne, a city I found charming and peaceful, here appears to be riddled with corruption and violent crime. No wonder the inhabitants are demanding change. I like Temple's style, which is pacy and vivid, but I thought this novel had too many flashbacks from too many characters, which became distracting.
Spare, dry humour leavening an exciting police thriller - entertaining and funny. But best of all, throughout, a piercing examination of the imperfect humans we all are - insightful, unvarnished, painful. Our hero is as flawed as any of them, yet you never lose your empathy and support for the character.

I read this book after having read The Broken Shore, which I also enjoyed immensely. While there are many similarities in style, this is not a carbon copy of The Broken Shore, and both rank as twoi of the best books I have enjoyed in ages.
'Bomb It To Snake' is an Australian expression that means, follow procedure-particularly in an emergency. A bomb is a long kick. Snake was the name of an Australian Rules Footballer. Originally instruction to members of Snake's football team on what to do when no other opportunities presented themselves. This fits our Inspector Stephen Villani's philosophy to a 'T'. He, the head of Homicide, said this to his team when he wanted the right thing done, now-'Bomb It To Snake'.

'Truth' could be one of the best crime thrillers I have read this year. Hard to tell, we are young yet, but it kept me engrossed throughout. Not one word too many, but I was mystified at times about some of the phrasing, but I muddled through and it came to me without much of a problem. Fires have engulfed much of the brush in Australia, and it has reached the valley near his boyhood home. Villani goes home to visit his father, Bob. They fall into their relationship, and we come to an understanding of sorts about why Villani needs to be in control, and why he is accused of being a bully. Things at the offices are busy, murder and mayhem are always on the docket. One of the new cases looks fairly easy to crack, a young prostitute found murdered in a new high rise building. So much security; cameras, voice prints, eyeball prints, but yet no information is forthcoming. Orders from on-high say to go easy, lie low. Politics and job security are raising their heads. Villani is a man who was brought up to be straight and narrow, but to maintain his job and not be swept under he has to play by the rules, doesn't he?

Family life is a problem. He has been married for many years to Laurie, three kids. The marriage is falling apart, his younger daughter is a druggie, and no one knows what she is up to. His work keeps him in his office 18 hours a day. He has men to lead and the family, well they need to muddle through. Villani is doing all he can, he thinks.

Corruption of power and damage by violence is the core of the novel. Drugs have made crime a murderous reality. Villani sees the negative side of life every day- he sees it in his work and in the politics that can overpower his life. He is an admitted adulterer, full of guilt, ex gambler, trying to quit smoking, but at the core, what does he have? He is a mentor to his men and a friend to some. This is a book with many layers, and we begin to unwrap them one by one. This is a marvelous novel, and the beginning of a Villani career.

Highly Recommended. prisrob 06-01-10
